![]() Jim Hardin, director of Judicial Affairs at Auburn, reported 11 fraternity-related offenses that required disciplinary action in 2008. … All of that community service work you do, your image, gone.†But the entire fraternity gets painted by the same broad brush. Those who do those sort of things represent a small subset of a large group. ‘Don’t play beer pong in your front yard, take pictures of yourselves and put it on the Internet.’ €œWe tell them, ‘The public holds the weapon, you hold the ammunition.’ The guys completely own their image. “The common generalization is that all fraternity men are thugs. €œPeople believe fraternities are evil, therefore they must always be evil,†said Paul Kittle, director of the Office of Greek Life at Auburn. The Auburn freshman hasn’t returned to school. Taylor Jones is still recovering from serious injuries received during a January altercation at a Sigma Phi Epsilon party. The Auburn Police Division has not said whether the driver, Scott Leighton, 19, also a Delta Sigma Phi brother, was drinking. The Delta Sigma Phi brother had a blood-alcohol level of 0.76, according to a coroner’s report. Hopefully I can make it out to a couple of their events.ĭid you rush at all? If so, how was formal rush? After turning down sig chi, I was dumb and didn't look into anywhere else or even do formal rush.Richard Hamrick’s visit to a 2005 Sigma Nu party at Auburn left him with brain swelling and a 10-day stay in a Columbus hospital.Īndrew Jackson Thurmond IV, 18, of Birmingham, was killed in September in a car wreck west of Auburn. I have already gotten on the list for three fraternities summer rush events, and will be here in Auburn during the summer, albeit extremely busy with summer semester. I appreciate your honest answer, and have heard some of the stories in regards to pledgeship and hazing, and feel like I have a general idea of what would be coming my way. Unfortunately, I was a bit anxious in regards to how demanding going Greek would be, and with my motives of being at Auburn for academics, I passed on pledging. I got a bid immediately due to being a legacy. ![]() Last summer (as an incoming freshman) I did summer rush for Sigma Chi and only went to one event. I guess I should have added some background info. Thanks for the awesome response! Funnily enough, I am going to be a returning sophomore next year. Anyways, good luck as you go through rush and come in to college (I'm assuming you're an incoming freshman) and War Eagle! Don't let the bashing make you think they all are a bunch of stereotypical "bros", as most of the Greeks I know don't fit that description (although there are plenty who do). Make sure to sign up online for Rush registration and keep on the look out for pre- rush events over the summer, as this will be your best chance to meet the brothers in an informal setting and usually gives you a better chance at a bid. ![]() Once again you need to meet some people and investigate them yourself to decide which ones seem "right" for you. There are different opinions on all of the fraternities, so finding an unbiased view of each one probably won't happen. Keep in mind you will be expected to adhere to certain tastes and styles while in a fraternity(this is where most of the frat bashing comes from), but some enjoy that aspect and it isn't necessarily a "bad" thing. If you put effort in getting to know your brothers, you're going to get that close bond you're looking for. I'm not in a fraternity, but from all the people I know in them the brotherhood aspect seems to be a "you get out of it what you put in" kind of deal. Hazing may be outlawed, but nearly every fraternity still does it. Fees and pledgeships vary, but no matter what Fraternity you join pledgeship is going to suck. All of them party quite a bit, so if you're looking for that its certainly there. ![]() ![]() Warning, incoming wall of text: Most of the Fraternities vary from year to year as new people come in and leave, so my best advice would be to start talking with people and visiting as soon as you can to find out which ones you're interested in. ![]()
